PROJECT CYCLE MANAGEMENT IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTOR

3 DAY CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME

 

Socio Research & Reform Foundation (NGO) / SMA Management Services (P) Ltd. (SMAM) has been organizing capacity building (training) programmes on different themes, over the last two and half years. Feed back received from time to time has indicated the need for training programmes on ‘Project Proposal Writing’, ‘Project Formulation’, Project Budgeting’, ‘Project Monitoring’, Project Evaluation’, etc.

 

We believe that the participants are as a matter of fact looking for a comprehensive programme on “Project Management”, which will cover all of the above and more and accordingly are planning to offer a capacity building programme on “Project Cycle Management” on the lines outlined below. The three day training programme to be offered in Delhi is scheduled on 6, 7 and 8 November 2012.

 

Objective of the Training

To enable participants to better formulate and manage projects under their domain and to provide understanding of international agencies quality requirements of projects / proposals.

 

CONTENTS

The Programme would broadly cover:

 

Introduction to Project Cycle Management (PCM)

Each of the following six stages of the PCM will be covered:

-          Identification

-          Planning, Formulation & Appraisal

-          Financing

-          Implementation

-          Monitoring, and

-          Evaluation

 

While covering various aspects of PCM, following areas would also be covered:

·         Proposal Writing

 

·         Log Frame Approach (LFA) for planning, managing and evaluation of projects

 

·        The Project Management Ecosystem

-   Influence of internal and external environment on the project

-      Project’s internal environment: people; capacity building environment; processes & tools;

-     Project’s external environment: regulations and government / donor policies; standards; practices; local availability of skilled human resources

-     Stakeholders analysis and role of different players

 

·         Project Management Phases

-      Initiation, planning, implementation, monitoring, adapting and closure

-      Methods: Guiding, Facilitation, Capacity Building, Team Building,   

-      Practices: Planning the work; creating a work plan; defining  procedures; managing work plan and monitoring processes and budgets; looking out for warning signs; managing modifications with due approvals; managing scope change creep; continuously identifying and assessing risks; resolving issues

·         Project Monitoring & Evaluation

-          Documenting Planned / intended and unintended outcomes,

-          analyzing for mid course corrections with focus on appropriate and immediate reporting and dissemination.  

 

Methodology

Methodology for most sessions would ensure active attention of participants through Group-Exercises, Case studies, experience sharing of a very experienced and knowledgeable faculty.

Vijay K. Sardana, M.Phil (Management), MBA, B. Tech (Hons) Agricultural Engineering; Independent Consultant & Former Executive Director, Society for Promotion of Wastelands Development (SPWD), Chief Executive Officer, Aga Khan Foundation (India), Regional Director, Region of South Asia, Plan International. Mr. Sardana’s expertise is in Building Teams: multi-sector and cross-cultural, Building Partnerships and Relationships Chain, Strategic Planning and Grants Management, Programmes Development, Promoting Research, Networking and Policy Advocacy, Civil Society Enhancement, and Promoting Philanthropy.

 

Dr. B. R. Patil, Former Senior Development Assistance Specialist, USAID, Senior Consultant, Monitoring & Evaluation, Plan International, Region of South Asia; Program Director, Population Foundation, India.

 

Subhash Mittal, Chartered Accountant with Financial Management experience of three decades in the development sector. Has rich experience in Project Appraisals and financial monitoring for multilateral, bilateral and other international aid agencies including UNICEF, World Bank, RNE, Danida, Sida, etc. 

 

Deepak Bansal, Chartered Accountant with extensive exposure in dealing with legal and statutory compliance issues for non-profit sector.

 

Dr. Neena Verma, Consultant Facilitator, Leadership Excellence, Team Building, Qualified MBTI Professional, Accredited Sensitivity Trainer, Trained Appreciative Inquiry Facilitator, formerly Managing Consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

 

Dr. Mihir Maitra, Starting his career with Action for Food Production (AFPRO), Dr. Maitra provided technical and managerial services associated with water resources management for improvement of agriculture to numerous NGOs in their rural livelihood improvement projects. Subsequent tenure in two bilateral technical cooperation projects in India, one funded by GtZ (Germany) and the other by RNE (Netherlands), provided him a broad based experience of working with international funding agencies and associated Ministries dealing with critical developmental concerns of natural resource management for improving rural livelihoods. The specific experience of working with yet another bilateral mechanism namely India Canada Environment Facility (ICEF) which supported environment improvement projects in land, water and energy sectors, provided him valuable experience in designing, monitoring and evaluating many community based capacity building projects under his charge as the Project manager.

 

Ved Arya, Managing Trustee, SRIJAN, Ved, after earning an undergraduate degree in Engineering and a Master’s degree in Business Administration, worked with Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN), which encouraged professionals to work in rural areas. Ved found the idea challenging, and joined them. This gave him the opportunity to combine his academic background and interest in Gandhian principles to improve rural development. In 1997 Ved left PRADAN and started SRIJAN, which he calls the most transformative experience of his life. SRIJAN promotes self-reliance and poverty alleviation through sustainable livelihood and water management projects in rural India’s poorest regions. Because his organization is involved at every level—from the design, to staffing and resource management, to implementation in the field—its projects have been unusually effective. Regarding

Participation fees: Rs. 6,000/- per participant. Three or more participants from an organization pay @ Rs. 5,000/- per participant.
