provided technical and managerial services associated with water
resources management for improvement of agriculture to numerous NGOs in
their rural livelihood improvement projects. Subsequent tenure in two
bilateral technical cooperation projects in India, one funded by GtZ
(Germany) and the other by RNE (Netherlands), provided him a broad based
experience of working with international funding agencies and associated
Ministries dealing with critical developmental concerns of natural
resource management for improving rural livelihoods. The specific
experience of working with yet another bilateral mechanism namely India
Canada Environment Facility (ICEF) which supported environment
improvement projects in land, water and energy sectors, provided him
valuable experience in designing, monitoring and evaluating many
community based capacity building projects under his charge as the
Project manager.
Ved Arya, Managing Trustee, SRIJAN,
Ved, after earning an undergraduate degree in Engineering and a Master’s
degree in Business Administration, worked with Professional Assistance
for Development Action (PRADAN), which encouraged professionals to work
in rural areas. Ved found the idea challenging, and joined them. This
gave him the opportunity to combine his academic background and interest
in Gandhian principles to improve rural development.
In 1997 Ved left PRADAN and started SRIJAN, which he calls the most
transformative experience of his life. SRIJAN promotes self-reliance and
poverty alleviation through sustainable livelihood and water management
projects in rural India’s poorest regions. Because his organization is
involved at every level—from the design, to staffing and resource
management, to implementation in the field—its projects have been
unusually effective. Regarding
